About KNTV

KNTV was the ABC affiliate serving the Monterey-Salinas market for over thirty years.  On July 14th, 2000, KNTV ended its affiliation agreement with ABC and began broadcasting as an independent station.  Currently, during prime time, KNTV broadcasts WB shows, followed by its hour-long WB Primetime News at 10:00.  Thus, simply overnight, KNTV went from the 156th largest market in the United States to the 5th largest.  In case you can't do the math, that's a jump of 151 markets.  And, KNTV and its owner Granite Broadcasting have negotiated with AT&T Broadband to secure cable coverage in most of the Bay Area on channel 3.  However, KNTV is not going to be an independent station for long.

On January 1st, 2002, KNTV is set to take over as the Bay Area's NBC affiliate, wrestling the affiliation rights away from KRON-4 in San Francisco.  Granite has agreed to pay NBC and its parent company General Electric over $200 million for the affiliation rights.  But, Granite has been quite cash-strapped for the past few months, so if Granite can't make the payment...then who knows where you'll be watching Friends after the clock strikes twelve on New Years Eve 2002.  Young Broadcasting, owner of KRON, has no intention to renew the affiliation with NBC, wanting to turn KRON into KCAL-North.

Many people in the Bay Area, especially in the North Bay (e.g. Marin County, Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Vallejo, Napa, St. Helena) are concerned that they can't receive a clear KNTV signal on an antenna.  Many people in these rural areas depend on an outdoor antenna for television reception, and cannot receive cable service.  Yes, there is DirecTV and DISH Network, but will KNTV work out a deal with those satellite providers in time for January 1st?  We'll just have to see.

Due to my inability to receive a clear KNTV signal and the lack of carriage on my local cable system, these listings are incomplete.  I apologize for the lack of coverage.  If you can complete these listings, please email me.

I'm in need of people to cover KNTV for NorCalTV News.  Unfortunately, AT&T Broadband has no intention of adding KNTV or KBWB to the Vacaville cable system, and I simply cannot get a clear signal over antenna from KNTV's transmitter in the South Bay.  If you have the equipment for taking screen shots, capturing video, can provide more information on KNTV, please email me.
