KCRA and KQCA are owned by
the infamous Hearst-Argyle Television station group. Both
stations share facilities on Television Circle in downtown Sacramento,
and KCRA produces all of KQCA's newscasts. In fact, nothing
is different in the KCRA newscasts on KQCA, right down to the
channel number bug in the corner.
KCRA is the home to DMA 19's
number one newscasts (in terms of ratings) and produces more
news than any other station in the market, with eight hours
every weekday. Although, I predict that KCRA won't be
the ratings leader for long. The once "ratings powerhouse"
is quickly being overtaken but its downtown neighbor, KXTV.
KXTV wins more awards than KCRA (including honors for
best newscast, News10 at 6:00), and has Oprah as its 5:00pm
news lead-in.
The one facet that's saving
KCRA from being eaten alive by KXTV is its long-standing relationship
with the Central Valley as a whole. Ask one of the many retirees
that live in the northern Sacramento area, and they're bound
to tell you that KCRA is their only souce for news. In
my opinion, the husband-and-wife anchor team of Dave Walker
and Lois Hart are really what's keeping this Hearst boat afloat.
